Dialogue A

A: That was an interesting game, wasn't it?
B: It really was! Well done! To be honest, I didn't think you were going to win at first.
A: I know! Neither did I. I think I was quite lucky.
B: No, you played very well. Anyway, you go and have a shower and change and I'll see you outside in a few minutes.

Dialogue B

A: Excuse me - I'd like some information about tours of the city.
B: Certainly, I can help you with that. There are three different buses offering trips round the centre. A: Do you know where they leave from?
B: Yes - two of them leave from the museum, and one leaves from the park.
A: Could you show me on the map, please?

Dialogue C

A: Excuse me. Have you got this month's issue of Music for Teens?
B: Yes, I think so. I think it came in this morning. Let me just check. Yes, here it is.
A: Great! How much is that, please?
B: I'm afraid it's two pounds fifty. Magazines just seem to get more and more expensive each month, don't they?

Dialogue D

A: Have you got the tickets with you, Henry? They need to check them before we go to our seats.
B: Yes, I've got them here. I'm really looking forward to the show, aren't you?
A: Yes, I can't wait! I just hope we can see. I hate it when you're sitting so far back that you can't see anything that's happening on stage.
B: Well, the tickets weren't cheap, so I hope we can see OK!

I love going to outdoor concerts, especially during the summer months, in the evening, just before the sun's gone down and the temperature starts to cool a bit. It's a great way to relax, listen to music and enjoy yourself. You can even dance and move around a bit if you like. If you're lucky, you'll find a nice patch of grass where you can sit down for a while and sip on some refreshing drinks with friends. Who wouldn't like that?

Speaker B

I'm a huge fan of the digital music revolution. I love being able to download any song I want and listen to it on a device that fits in my pocket. There's no end to what kind of music you can get in this format, because it seems like nearly every tune ever made has been put into this computerised form. I also like the fact that you can buy just one song, and not an entire album. That's less expensive, in my opinion.

I think music's changed quite a lot since my parents' day. Nowadays, I think there's a lot of electronic instruments in use, and that's kind of disappointing. I've listened to a few of my mum's old records, and I like the real guitars and drums without the electronic sound. I like the real voices too, not ones that have been changed digitally. I think there's quite a lot of real music out there these days, but there's also lots of competition from pop bands and so on.

Speaker D

I've been playing in a band for a couple of years now. I can't say I'm ready to quit my job to become a full-time musician, but I think my band mates and I have got a good thing going on. We've almost got enough music to put an album together, and then we're going to try and save up enough money to record it. It's expensive, being a musician, but if we make it big, money won't be a problem any more.

Speaker E

I think record shops will become a thing of the past. I realise it's much more convenient to buy digital music, and I'm not against that. But I miss hanging out in a record shop, looking at all the album covers, running into people you know who love music also. It was a social thing. Sure, there are still some record shops around, but I imagine they're having a tough time. J feel sorry for them!

Denise: How's it going, Greg? I heard about your football match last Saturday. What happened?
Greg: Hi, Denise. Yeah, it wasn't such a great game. It was freezing cold and I wasn't really in the mood to play.
Denise: Yeah, I though that might have something to do with it.
Greg: Well, really, I think we just weren't prepared. Some guys had missed practice a few times.
Denise: Don't worry, there are plenty of other matches coming up. Speaking of football, I'm going with some friends to a Carlton United match on Sunday. Would you like to come?
Greg: That would be great! Actually, my team-mates were talking about going, but they weren't sure if they could make it.
Denise: Oh really? Because of football practice?
Greg: No, I think some of them have other plans that they'd like to get out of I told them I'd like to go with them if they went, but I don't think they'd mind if I went with you.
Denise: Well, we're definitely going. We've already bought tickets.
Greg: Sounds like a good plan. I'll call my dad and see if he can get me a ticket.
Denise: Actually, one of my friends can't go. You could have his ticket if you like.
Greg: Oh, I see. Sure! I can pay him for it. How will you get to the game? Denise: We're taking two cars. My sister can take us in her car, and my dad will take my other friends in his car. It's Harry and Pala that are going.
Greg: Oh, great! Paula's in my History class. I don't know Harry so well, actually, but he seems nice.
Denise: OK, so we're leaving at 2 on Sunday. That gives us enough time to get there. I hope that's not too early for you.
Greg: No, not at all. I can get my mum to drop me off at your house, actually.
Denise: There's no need for that. We'll come and get you. Greg: Are you sure? I don't mind at alL
Denise: No, no. Actually, I think your house is on the way out of town, isn't it?
Greg: No, it's on the other side of the school. Denise: I see. Perhaps it is better if you come to our house. But I'll ask my sister - maybe she won't mind.
Greg: Let me know when you can.
Denise: I'm glad you can make it. We're going to have a great time! Greg: Yeah, I'm lookingforward to it!

Hi Stan,
Thanks for your letter. It's always good to hear from you! I understand you need help choosing a pet. I hope I can help. In my opinion, dogs are great pets. They're very friendly and easy to take care of I think the best place to get them is from an animal shelter. They have many nice animals there, and I don't think you have to pay. To take care of a dog, you need to make sure it has plenty of food and water, and you need to take the dogfor walks. Let me know how your search for a pet goes. I'd like to meet it some day! Bye for now,

It's good to have a hobby because it gives you something interesting to do, and it's something that you want to do. You can choose whatever hobby you like. This means you'll be excited to do it, unlike with homework or household chores that you have to do. One hobby that interests me is collecting coins from other countries, because it's amazing to see what des igns are on these coins and how they are different from the ones in your own country. I would probably prefer to do a hobby on my own, especially with coin collecting, because it's not something you can do with other people, but I like to show my coin collection to my friends.
Does anyone you know have a hobby?
My friend Sasha has a hobby of building train sets. He has one of the biggest train sets I've ever seen! It's got lots of track, some bridges and even a little town.
Why are hobbies less popular today than they used to be?
I think hobbies are less popular today because people spend their time on the internet a lot, or they use their mobile phone, or t/:zey keep themselves busy in some other way. I think people are also busier these days than they used to be. But it's nice to have a hobby because it can help you relax and take your mind off stress.
Task 2 (2-3 minutes)
You play the part of a student at an international school. Your name is Eric/Erica. You are outside the school building during a break between classes. A classmate approaches you to ask you about something.
• Agree to let the student borrow your notes. Mention you noticed they weren't in class and find out if everything's OK. (Of course. I noticed you weren't in class. Is everything OK?)
• Ask if they want to just copy your notes and return them. Let them know they can take the notes home and give them back tomorrow. (Do you want to copy the notes and give them back later? ... You can take them home with you, if that's easier. ... You can give them back to me tomorrow in class.)
• Invite them to a cafe after school. (By the way, some of us are going to a cafe after school. Do you want to join us?)
• Accept an invitation to a football match tomorrow night. (OK, let's go.)
(S =Student; I= Interlocutor) S: Hello, Eric/Erica. Nice to see you.
I: Hi!
S: I'm glad I ran into you. I was wondering if I could borrow your notes from yesterday's Chemistry class.
I: Of course. I noticed you weren't in class. ls everything OK?
S: Yes, everything's fine. I just had to go to the dentist and I missed a couple of morning classes. My teeth are fine, though.
I: That's good. So, do you want to copy the notes and give them back later?
S: Yes, that's what I'll do. Is it OK if I give them back to you later today?
I: Yes, that's fine. Or you can take them home with you, if that's easier.
S: Actually, maybe it is. I can sit down and copy them while I'm watching TV tonight.
I: Great. You can give them back to me tomorrow in class.
S: Thanks a lot. I really appreciate it.
I: By the way, some of us are going to a cafe after school. Do you want to join us?
S: I'd love to, but I'm leaving right after school to help my mum prepare dinner. What are you doing tomorrow?
I: I don't have any plans yet. Why?
S: Would you like to go to a football. match? I: Sure. Who's playing?
S: It's teams from around the area. I think it's going to be a good game.
I: OK, let's go. So, I hope it's a great dinner.
S: Thanks. I'll see you tomorrow. I: Bye!
